(Texture with Acrylic and Modelling Paste)
This painting is inspired by one of my favourite fairy tales, The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen.
At the end of the story, the Little Mermaid takes one last look at the prince before throwing herself into the sea, where she feels her body dissolves into foam. Instead of perishing, she is transformed into a transparent spirit of the air, through which she can understand the air spirits conversing with her. They tell her that they are the daughters of the air, whose purpose is to bring comfort and kindness to the world, travelling on the wind to cool the air in hot lands and bring relief to those in need.
For the first time, the Little Mermaid sheds tears. She kisses the bride’s forehead, gently fans the prince with a cool breeze, and rises to join the air daughters as they drift across the sky on rosy clouds. Through her compassion and selfless love, she discovers a higher purpose: by bringing goodness into the world, she will one day receive a soul.
I love this fairy tale so much that I have drawn many images of the Little Mermaid in ink on paper. This painting is my first depiction of her on canvas.
