This painting is inspired by Venus – both the brilliant planet in the night sky and the goddess of the same name as portrayed by the ancient Romans.
The Goddess of Love, Venus was born from a violent act. The sky god Uranus was overthrown by his son Saturn, who cast part of him into the sea. As the waters churned, foam gathered on the surface of the ocean, and from that foam Venus emerged, rising from the sea fully formed. She was carried ashore upon a shell. Guided by the wind and protected by nature, beauty followed wherever she is found.
Venus was the consort of the God of War, Mars. From their union were born Cupid, the God of Love, and Concordia, the Goddess of Harmony and Peace.
